Highlights from the 30% Club by Dawn Ermes.

I had the privilege of attending the 30% Club members’ annual dinner last night with guest speaker, Peter Wharton-Hood and what a superbly put together event it was! Not only was the venue magnificent and the food amazing, the MC was exceptionally engaging and the speaker was extremely enlightening. A thoroughly well put together and professional function.

A few highlights from the evening that I would like to mention were firstly from Peter Wharton Hood’s talk. Peter has a wealth of experience having held some highly regarded roles within the financial services industry, particularly banking, and who has a passion for diversity and inclusion. He spoke from the perspective of having come from a privileged male dominated environment and asked the question: who is more important: the shareholder or the customer? Well, the answer is neither, it’s your staff and through diversity and inclusion in the work place, this will lend itself to more equal opportunity and therefore a more fair and equitable work place.

He went further to say that a key role of a Chairman in any organisation is to ensure that all women are treated equally and that any unfair practises are addressed. It is up to leaders to step up to the plate and help towards working on removing unconscious bias and lead towards a gender neutral framework with open engagement across organisations and thereby creating trust. 100% less stressed is 100% better output!

Peter’s talk was then followed by a presentation by Chantel Ilbury who is working together with Clem Sunter on programmes that they have put together to address our inadequacies in our schooling system. The focus here was on encouraging pupils, to have the confidence in knowing that we all have the ability to think more strategically and to by dynamic thinkers to remove the rigidity that is so prevalent currently.

A fantastic evening all in all!
